LaToya D. Johnson

National Renaissance Staffulty of the Month: LaToya D. Johnson

This month’s National Renaissance Staffulty of the Month is LaToya D. Johnson from DuBose Middle School in South Carolina. Nominator Mandy McDermott wrote:

Mrs. Johnson is such a phenomenal leader of this school. She is our 7th grade administrator and is BEYOND supportive of our Renaissance program. This is only her second year as an administrator and she has touched all of us with the care and compassion that she shows ALL of us every day. She “shows up” every single day for every human on this campus. She is willing to think outside of the box and help each and every student. She stays calm in every instant and does not take any of us for granted. She puts on a smile even when you know she is not having a good day. She truly wants all of us to be seen, heard and loved on this campus. She always says yes to every crazy idea – well, most crazy ideas – that I bring to her.  She wants her teachers and her students to be happy and love coming to work. She will dress up and be silly with all of us. She knows each of us and loves each of us for the good, the bad, and the ugly. She is accepting of all of us! I truly cannot be more thankful to have such an incredible administrator that supports and loves her school the way that she does. Every school needs a Mrs. Johnson when things get ugly to bring calmness, clarity and love! She even went kayaking and paddling with the leadership class.

What do you teach? Are you involved with anything else at your school?

I am an assistant principal at DuBose Middle School.

What is something you appreciate about your school’s culture?

I appreciate the inclusive nature of our school’s culture. We foster an environment where every student is celebrated, regardless of their academic or behavioral standing.

What’s a favorite Renaissance moment for you?

My favorite Renaissance moments are undoubtedly the quarterly rallies. I deeply value the opportunity to witness the recognition of our students and staff for their remarkable achievements at DuBose. The energy and excitement generated during these events are truly outstanding. It’s a phenomenal experience to celebrate the accomplishments of our exceptional students and staff, who play such a vital role within our school community.

How has Renaissance affected you personally?

The Renaissance program has significantly enhanced my personal work experience by fostering a consistently positive environment. I particularly anticipate the Monthly Culture Challenges, which serve as a motivating force, encouraging me to strive for continuous improvement in my support of both staff and students.

What is something you are “All In” for inside or outside of school?

Inside of school, I am fully committed to supporting teachers in cultivating a positive and thriving school culture. Outside of school, I am equally dedicated to promoting DuBose Middle School within the community and ensuring that its excellence is widely recognized.

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to build self-confidence?

If you’re looking to build self-confidence, I’d suggest speaking positively to and about yourself. Celebrate those small victories and be consistent with your efforts. Don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it, and remember that sometimes, stepping outside your comfort zone is essential for growth.

LaToya will each receive a coffee tumbler and a lapel pin in recognition of her achievements.
