This month’s National Renaissance Student of the Month is Luke Greller from Newberg High School in Oregon. Nominator Mark Brown wrote:
When I think of joy, no student embodies it more than Luke Greller. As a senior, Luke is deeply involved across campus and consistently brings positivity and energy into every space he enters. As both a captain on the football team and a leader in ASB, Luke is a source of encouragement and connection for both his peers and Staffulty. When I am walking in the hallways, it’s common to hear a cheerful, booming ‘MB!’ long before I even see him—Luke makes it a point to greet people and spread joy, even in passing. This fall, he partnered with another student to plan and emcee our all-school welcome back pep rally. Thanks to his enthusiasm and stage presence, many staff and students said it was the best rally we’ve had in years. Luke’s energy transformed the atmosphere in the gym that day, setting the tone for an incredible school year.
What makes Luke stand out is that his joy isn’t situational—it’s who he is. Whether in the classroom, on the field, or with his peers, Luke finds ways to celebrate small moments, uplift others, and create spaces where people feel seen and valued. Luke is a rockstar student leader. As a three-sport athlete, it would be easy for him to devote all his time to athletics. Instead, he pours equally into our school community. With our ASB advisor out on maternity leave this fall, Luke has stepped up to ensure the leadership class continues to thrive. Under his guidance and example, the group hasn’t missed a beat and continues to do amazing work. We are incredibly proud of Luke and grateful for the energy, passion, and JOY he brings to Newberg Nation every day.
What are you involved with at your school?
FCA, Football, ASB Leadership, Golf and Basketball.
What is something you appreciate about your school’s culture?
I appreciate how most kids get along with each other. You could be totally new to our school, and by the end of the day you will walk out of the doors with close friends you just met.
What’s a favorite Renaissance moment for you?
My favorite Renaissance moment was when we hosted one of PC’s leadership conferences at our school, and to start the whole thing off we did a flash mob!
How has Renaissance affected you personally?
Renaissance has taught me how to interact and work with people that are super different than me. I wouldn’t have talked to people outside of my circle in school, but Renaissance has thought me to work with people I wouldn’t have in the past.
What’s something that helps you feel Better Than Good?
When I read scripture and pray daily I feel great, because I am close to God.
What’s something you do to help others feel Better Than Good?
Something that I do to help others is to be patient when needed and listen to others. This helps people feel heard, and encourages them to keep coming up with creative ideas.
What advice would you give to someone who is looking to be more joyful?
I would tell them that I once tried to find true joy in my sports, my accomplishments and in the people around me, but didn’t find it. When I perused my relationship with God that’s when he brought that joy into my life.
Luke will receive a water bottle and a decal in recognition of his achievement.
