This month’s National Renaissance Staffulty of the Month is Shana Murphy from Summerville High School in South Carolina. Nominator Callie Neal wrote:
On paper, Mrs. Murphy is our Prevention and Intervention Secretary at Summerville High School. She is charged with doing the majority of the paperwork for our ‘Grad File’ each year and helps with identification and tracking of our at-risk students as we help provide them with the support needed as they face their barrier to graduation – some may be behind on credits, are new to the school or country, returning from the alternative school, or anything in between. She manages our McKinney Vento students in the building and works with our District Leaders on getting assistance our students and families who are facing homelessness – whether it’s behind the scenes with the paperwork or by giving them backpacks of supplies and hygiene items to take home. To parents, she’s usually the first reassuring smile when they need it most. She manages School and District Probation contracts and meetings with Admin when students are coming back from the alternative school or a suspension. She’s the first person families talk to when they come to the building because they’ve lost their home to a fire or any other awful circumstance. And she’s the person who will be with families who are coming to us looking for alterative routes to help their student be successful.
And even though students meet Mrs. Murphy typically under difficult circumstances or due to discipline consequences, she treats them with kindness and the expectation to be better and do better. She listens to understand and reminds students that it’s always a good day to do better and to start over. And because of who Mrs. Murphy is and how Mrs. Murphy is, our kids show up to her office for what they need – whether it’s a bookbag, a Rice Krispy treat, or a hug. The joy Mrs. Murphy exudes is evident. She makes everybody feel like a somebody, and she is the woman for the job! We are so lucky to have her at SHS!!
What do you teach? Are you involved with anything else at your school?
I serve as the Prevention & Interventions Secretary, where I assist in coordinating Evening School and tutoring programs, including teacher assignments and scheduling. I am also an active member of the MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) team. Additionally, I provide backup support for both the Principal’s Secretary and the front office, helping ensure smooth day-to-day operations across the school.
What is something you appreciate about your school’s culture?
I appreciate that, despite the size of our school, the events and activities organized for both students and staff help create a close-knit, supportive environment. There is a strong emphasis on building meaningful relationships, and we are intentional about ensuring every student has a trusted adult they can rely on within the building.
What is something that helps you feel Better Than Good?
I feel Better Than Good when students who met me on their very first day return to check in or simply spend a few minutes talking. Knowing they feel comfortable and safe enough to come back—especially when they’re navigating difficult situations—means everything. Sometimes, a simple snack and a heartfelt conversation are exactly what they need, and I’m grateful to be that support for them.
What is something you do to help others feel Better Than Good?
I help others feel Better Than Good by offering encouragement and acknowledging their efforts and accomplishments—big or small. Sometimes all someone needs is a reminder that they’re seen, valued, and capable. I strive to be that reminder, giving them the push they need to keep going and keep believing in themselves.
What advice would you give to someone who is looking to become more optimistic?
I believe the best way to become more optimistic is to surround yourself with people who lift you up—and to be that positive voice for others as well. Focus on the small wins, practice gratitude, and remember that even in difficult moments, there’s always a bit of light to be found.
Shana will each receive a coffee tumbler and a lapel pin in recognition of her achievements.
