National Renaissance Student of The Month: Vanessa Gutierrez

This month’s National Renaissance Student of the Month is Vanessa Gutierrez from La Puente High School in La Puente, CA. Nominator Joey Zamora wrote:

For the past four years, Vanessa has excelled at being one of the best students and leaders at La Puente High School. She has been a tremendous help and role model to all her peers. Her leadership includes being President for the Renaissance Leadership program, cabinet member for CSF  and team captain on the Volleyball, Track and Basketball teams, as well as being awarded several recognitions such as: the Most Creative Award, Most Committed Award, Best Artist Award, Trailblazer Award, Most Helpful Award, Most Inspirational Student, Most Participation Award, Rookie of the Award and finally MVP and Leader of the Year of the Renaissance Program.  She is the most awarded student in the Renaissance Program ever at La Puente High School. What makes these recognitions more special is that every one of these awards were voted on by Vanessa’s classmates. She has managed to volunteer her time as a tutor, reading to kids with the “Read Across America” program as well as assisting football athletes with their homework. She has also found time to volunteer with events around the city, setting up and cleaning up, such as the 9/11 Memorial events, La Puente Marathon, and running the scoreboard at youth games.  The last two years, she also took the lead in creating ideas for the “Start with Hello Week” initiative, the Sandy Hook Promise, to promote positivity on campus and eliminate bullying and social isolation. More so, she volunteered time as a manager and statistician for the boys’ basketball and football programs for two years.  She has completed over 200 hours of community service. She has excelled in promoting a positive environment, instilling encouragement in her fellow classmates, and creating awards and recognition initiatives for all the accomplishments of students, athletes and staff on campus. She is the epitome of a true Renaissance Leader.

What are you involved with at your school?

I am involved with Renaissance, Avid, Girls Volleyball, Girls Basketball, Track and Field, HOSA, CSF, Science Club, Co25, and Manager of the Football team.

What is something you appreciate about your school’s culture?

My school culture is diverse but my school is mostly a Hispanic community (my origin is Guatemalan and Mexican). Being able to surround myself with others who are like me, and have the same struggle, makes us closer and more able to understand each other.

What’s a favorite Renaissance moment for you?

My favorite memory in Renaissance would have to be doing things to help others or give thanks. One example is doing Read Across America, where we go to elementary schools and read Dr. Seuss books. Another one would be adopting a family, where during Christmas time, each group gets a person, and we all pitch in to give them Christmas gifts. The ages range from toddlers to teenagers or mothers in need.

How has Renaissance affected you personally?

Renaissance has affected me personally because I was able to become more outgoing and the person I am today. When entering high school, I was shy and not involved, but I joined Renaissance my freshman year. Over time, I joined sports and clubs, made friends, and became someone with a voice. Because Renaissance welcomed me, I was able to grow as a person.

What’s something you are “All In” for inside and outside of school?

Something I am all in for is sports. At school, I do sports and sports photography. Outside of school, I help my coach with elementary and middle school tournaments. I also help my school’s other teams: managing the football team, helping boys volleyball with the scoreboard, and even taking photos of softball/baseball.

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to build resilience?

The advice I would give someone who is trying to build resilience is that mistakes and failures are all part of being successful. Not everyone gets one attempt to get things right. Failure is a strength that makes us grow stronger – learn from it and never take it for granted.

Vanessa will receive a water bottle and a decal in recognition of her achievement.
