This month’s National Renaissance Staffulty of the Month is Elijah Scyffore from Columbia Central High School in Tennessee. Nominator Courtney Burd wrote:
Elijah Scyffore shows an incredible commitment to Columbia Central High School through the way he supports students, leads his department, and helps strengthen the school community. After losing the other members of his Special Education team, Mr. Scyffore stayed committed to CHS and stepped up to take on even more responsibility. As SpEd co-chair, he has worked hard to manage student schedules, IEP meetings, behaviors, case managers, and the many other responsibilities that come with leading the department. He has also helped new special education teachers adjust to their roles while bringing more organization, teamwork, and consistency to the department. What stands out most about Mr. Scyffore is how much he cares about students. He makes an effort to know students throughout the building, not just those he directly teaches, and works to make sure they feel seen, supported, and valued. He is also someone his coworkers can depend on, always willing to help, collaborate, and keep a positive attitude even when the workload is challenging. Mr. Scyffore’s commitment reaches far beyond the Special Education department. He is involved in Renaissance Student Council and FCA and is working to improve the culture of CHS while helping the school pursue Jostens Renaissance School of Distinction recognition. His hard work, leadership, patience, and positive attitude make a real difference in the lives of students and staff. Mr. Scyffore truly represents what it means to be committed to CHS and to making the school better for everyone.
What do you teach? Are you involved with anything else at your school?
I am a Special Education teacher. I also serve as a sponsor for our Renaissance Student Council and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).
What is something you appreciate about your school’s culture?
When looking at our school’s culture, I appreciate the combination of close-knit community and strong work ethic. This makes our school a place where people are motivated to give their best and support one another along the way.
What’s a favorite Renaissance moment for you?
A memorable Renaissance experience for me was attending JRGC for the first time this past summer. I came away feeling renewed, inspired, and prepared to begin this school year with a clearer vision and renewed hope. The event provided meaningful opportunities to connect with like-minded educators, engage in thought-provoking sessions, and reflect deeply on my purpose as a teacher. These experiences have energized me to approach my work with greater passion and intentionality, knowing I am part of a supportive community committed to making a positive impact on students’ lives.
How has Renaissance affected you personally?
Through Jostens Renaissance, I have discovered a community of educators dedicated to nurturing the whole person, not just the intellect. The practical and valuable resources provided by Josten’s have equipped me to do this. Additionally, I have gained insights on how to effectively foster positive change within our school’s culture.
What inspires you to Fight Forward?
My faith inspires me to Fight Forward. I see and believe the intrinsic value of each individual because they are made in the image of God. This fills my heart with a love for each person I have the privilege of serving.
Why is reslience important?
Resilience is important because everyone will face difficulties of some kind. It is crucial to be able to withstand those trials while maintaining hope and love, knowing that every challenge is temporary.
Elijah will receive a coffee tumbler and a lapel pin in recognition of his achievements.
