A Letter to Me

Have your elementary students practice reflecting and goal setting by instructing them to write a letter to themselves as a high schooler.

School Type: Elementary school

Activity Goal: Encourage graduation and SEL activity

Prep Time:  5 minutes

People Required: One Staffulty member and students

Space Required: Desk space

Timing: Any 10 – 20 minute period of time

Materials: Pencil, paper, crayons or markers, and an envelope

Submitted by: South Hancock Elementary School, MS

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Write the question “What is my main goal while enrolled in school?” on the board, and then verbally brainstorm with students.
  2. After brainstorming, play the graduation pomp and circumstance song on a speaker for everyone to listen. Ask students questions like:
    • “Is this familiar?”
    • “Where have you heard this?”
  3. Discuss the song, what it means to people, and how the days spent in school will lead to an important day in their future – their graduation!
  4. Instruct students to write a letter to their future self with their main school goals, and how achieving these goals will help them reach graduation.
  5. Have the students seal the envelope with their name on the outside.
  6. The envelope can then be kept safe by the teacher or school in order to give each student their note at the beginning of their first year in high school.
