Zach Olson

National Renaissance Staffulty of the Month: Zach Olson

This month’s National Renaissance Staffulty of the Month is Zach Olson from West Jefferson High School in Ohio. Nominator Jen Miller wrote:

Zach is responsible for organizing our monthly culture talks at the school. He is steadfast in his beliefs and genuinely cares about our students, striving to support their well-being not only today but also in the future. Zach determines the focus for each month; sometimes it includes videos from the Renaissance resources, while others times it involves activities. He prepares the framework that enables the student leaders to be able to discuss the topics in a way that middle school students will understand and engage with. Zach is able to generate topics that support the overall goal, fill existing gaps or provide opportunities for students to build relationships with both staff and peers.

What do you teach? Are you involved with anything else at your school?

High School Special Education and I am a football coach.

What is something you appreciate about your school’s culture?

The support and buy in we have from the administration team all the way down to the students walking the hallways. We have been able to make changes each year and I feel we are all pulling in the same direction.

What’s a favorite Renaissance moment for you?

Our Homecoming Bonfire and Tailgate. We have a tremendous student turnout for this event, including many students that aren’t involved in other events

How has Renaissance affected you personally?

Renaissance has been a big part of my career over the last eight years. We have seen a big change in our school’s climate and culture as well as the overall way that students interact with each other. My own kids (elementary age) love attending our events and spending time with the high school students.

What is something that helps you feel Better Than Good?

Having positive interactions with our students at school, seeing them be successful in and out of the classroom.

What is something you do to help others feel Better Than Good?

I try to bring a positive attitude to school each day. We control our own attitude and effort and I try to make sure, regardless of how I am feeling, that I bring the best version of myself for the students of our school.

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to make decisions that are more consistent with their values?

Be disciplined. It all starts with discipline. If you want consistency, you have to make intentional choices each and everyday regardless of the circumstances you are facing.

Zach will each receive a coffee tumbler and a lapel pin in recognition of his achievements.
